Chargeback
A forced reversal of a card payment initiated by the cardholder's issuer, usually after a dispute.
A chargeback removes funds from the merchant and returns them to the cardholder while the dispute is examined. The merchant can contest it by supplying evidence within scheme deadlines, and outcomes are decided under card-scheme rules.
Operationally, chargebacks require a workflow: notification ingestion from every provider, deadline tracking, evidence collection, submission, outcome recording and reporting, because excessive chargeback ratios carry scheme penalties.
